About All Things Food Forest
What is a food forest?
A food forest is a regenerative system that allows you to simulate a real-world forest environment for the purposes of agriculture; i.e. growing food, or herbs, or native plants for the sake of wildlife, or really anything that your heart desires as long as it can live and thrive in the region that you call home.
The core of an agroforestry or food forest system is trying to minimize external pressures that ordinarily have to implemented into managing a traditional agricultural system, be that fertilization, pesticides, herbicides, even using external water sources like municipal supplies, a well, or anything other than rain and other natural waterworks to sustain your plants. The idea is to have cyclical, self-managing crops that you can harvest from continually. At first, overstory or cover crop plants grow that are phased out or trimmed continually, and they return to the ground to restore the topsoil. If done correctly, the ground retains enough water for healthy soil while still draining properly, and gives good fungi and beneficial microbiotic organisms a home.
Now, all this doesn't necessarily have to be the case. Your food forest system can be managed with or supplemented by sprinklers or fertilizer or even pesticides, if that's what you're going for. But the most true and effective way to implement a system like this would be to utilize all of the available strategies for making it near identical to a real life forest, and letting it manage itself!
